Geography
Bora-Bora is a volcanic island that formed around seven million years ago. It has a six-mile-long main island and a two-mile-wide, coral lagoon. There are two peaks on the island, Mount Otemanu and Mount Pahia, each reaching about two hundred feet and sixty meters in height. The rest of the island is composed of coral motus.
The island is surrounded by a coral reef that spans over two kilometers in the southwest. It supports a series of islets, including Motu Mute, which was home to the U.S. Army air base during World War II. It now serves as the island’s airport.
