It has a dengue research wing
Dengue is a serious disease with serious symptoms. It is caused by a mosquito called Aedes aegypti. This mosquito is a global problem and is present in tropical areas. It breeds in artificially filled water containers and has four distinct viral serotypes. The GCUF dengue research wing helps in fighting this disease.
The CDC held a national seminar on dengue awareness and the CDC arranged a dengue control lecture by Dr. Waseem Akram. The university has set up a dengue research wing to study the dengue mosquito. Scientists there are investigating various aspects of dengue control, such as insecticide use and botanical diversity.
The virus was first reported in Japan during World War II, but dengue-like symptoms have been described in ancient China and the West Indies. In 1780, Benjamin Rush observed the first dengue-like symptoms – what was then known as dengue shock syndrome. Later, similar symptoms were reported in North America and Caribbean islands. During the eighteenth century, severe dengue disease was reported in the Mississippi river basin. The mosquito that spread the virus was identified as an Aedes aegypti.
The female Aedes aegypti transmits the virus to her progeny during copulation. It is important to understand how Aedes aegyptian mosquitoes transmit dengue to humans and animals.
