The National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) was established in 1991 by the Government of Pakistan. Its ethos is based on the multi-campus concept with each college growing as an independent centre of excellence. It received its Charter through a Presidential Ordinance which was subsequently converted into an Act in 1997. Its patron is the President of Pakistan, while the Prime Minister serves as its Chancellor. Its founding Rector was Lieutenant General Shujaat Hussain. The current Rector is Lieutenant General Muhammad Asghar.
