Rents in Spokane are high, with no vacancy. Dealing with rent hikes is never fun. But in comparison to Seattle, Spokane is much cheaper. According to the Bureau of Economic Activity, the cost of living in Seattle is 10 percent higher than in Spokane. While Seattle is a more expensive city, Spokane is only 5 percent more expensive than the national average.
Spokane is ranked 36th on the 2022-23 list

While the Spokane area was once considered to be one of the nation’s best real estate markets, its affordability has declined. The Bulldogs’ nonconference schedule is especially challenging, with four top-25 opponents. The team will play No. 12 Texas and No. 4 Kentucky in Spokane Arena, respectively. Another top-25 game is against No. 20 Alabama in Birmingham, eight days before Christmas.
Spokane is home to some distinct neighborhoods. For example, Eagle Ridge is a series of residential subdivisions on the south side of the city, off Highway 195. The area is relatively rural, with tree-lined streets. While this community features a neighborhood shopping center, it still suffers from inadequate vehicular access. The highway, which serves the area, is congested and wasn’t designed to handle traffic safely. Because of this, residents must leave the neighborhood for most of their daily needs.
In addition to being the best place to live in Washington, Spokane is also home to HoopsFest, the largest three-on-three basketball tournament in the world. With a growing economy and thriving culinary scene, Spokane is one of the most desirable places to live.
It is less ambitious than Seattle
Spokane’s growth has been slow, but its metro area has seen $2.8 billion in investment in the past six years. The city is also becoming more entrepreneurial. Its University Research District, for example, includes degrees from six different higher education institutions, including a medical school. In the next five years, the city is planning major investments in higher education, public safety, recreation and entertainment, and transportation.
One of the benefits of Spokane’s growth is that it has a thriving job market. Currently, it has one of the best jobs in the nation. However, rising housing prices are affecting the city’s virtuous economic cycle. According to a Realtors report, if Spokane doesn’t deal with its housing problems, the city will suffer significant social consequences, ranging from young families being unable to afford housing, to small businesses struggling to hire employees and stay competitive.
In Spokane, the city’s urban planning has benefited from a thriving brewing industry. The city is undergoing a renaissance of its downtown, and the development of Kendall Yards is one of the city’s biggest projects since the Inlander was founded. The publication ushered in the craft brewing revolution and celebrated local writers with national recognition. Meanwhile, Ted Dawson, an outspoken advocate of downtown revitalization, is a volunteer leader for a $65 million city project to update Riverfront Park.
In addition to the arts scene, Spokane boasts a thriving business community. Two of its biggest employers are tech companies. A large number of tech startups are operating in the city. Despite its smaller size, it’s also home to a number of media companies and organizations. The media industry journal called the Inlander one of the 10 newspapers that do it right in 2016. Inlander has a start-up mentality and a vibrant local creative culture, which have helped the city attract new businesses and jobs.
It has a lower crime rate
In a recent study, the National Council for Home Safety and Security compared crime rates in large U.S. cities to Spokane’s. The study considered cities with a population of at least ten thousand people. The report looked at FBI Uniform Crime Reports from 2017 and ranked the cities according to property crime and violent crime rates. Spokane was ranked 79th out of 80. In comparison, Tacoma ranked 86th.
Police chief Craig Meidl explained that new state laws have lowered crime rates in some areas. One such example is a new limit on detaining people without probable cause. In the past, the law allowed a person to be held based on “reasonable suspicion,” but the new law requires probable cause, which requires more proof of a crime. Proactive law enforcement practices like this have helped Spokane’s crime rate to fall by two-and-a-half percent in the past year.
Spokane offers a great mix of old and new, and is one of the largest cities in Washington. The downtown area used to be underdeveloped, but the opening of the River Park Square Mall brought new businesses. It is walkable, and public transportation is available. A city like Spokane has a strong sense of community and pride.
The crime rate in Spokane is slightly higher than the national average. However, violent crimes are more common than property crimes and account for about 15 percent of the state’s total crime rate. Spokane’s violent crime rate is six hundred incidents per thousand residents, which is higher than the national average of three hundred and seventy-two offenses per million people. While there are many ways to stay safe in Spokane, the most important thing is to be aware of your surroundings and take precautions.
Spokane has a relatively low cost of living compared to the rest of the US. The average cost of groceries, gas, and health care are significantly lower, and the cost of public transportation is also cheaper. The city also does not experience many natural disasters like earthquakes and forest fires, although it can experience minor flooding and other disasters.
It has more parks
There are many different parks in Spokane. Spokane’s state park, Mount Spokane, is a massive 13,919 acres and has over 100 miles of trails. The park is located just north of the city and is part of the larger Selkirk Mountain Range. Mount Spokane is one of the largest peaks in the Inland Northwest and is known for its beautiful scenery and outdoor recreation opportunities. Other major peaks in the area include Day Mountain and Kit Carson. Hiking trails are available to the top of these peaks. Other attractions include the Riverfront Park and Lake Pend Oreille.
In addition to having many parks, Spokane offers many outdoor events. The city is home to the Lilac Bowl, which is an open-air amphitheatre that hosts several events throughout the year. The city was chosen as the site for the 1974 Expo World’s Fair, which brought the river back into the city. This event also brought business downtown and changed local attitudes about nature.
It has a higher concentration of mansions designed by Kirtland Cutter
Spokane’s architecture has been influenced by many notable architects throughout the 20th century. This includes the highly acclaimed Kirtland Cutter, who is considered one of the most significant architects in the history of Spokane. The city’s historic downtown commercial district is marked with American Craftsman bungalow residences and Romanesque Revival style buildings. These buildings helped Spokane achieve national recognition as a city with a unique character.
After his arrival in Spokane in 1887, Cutter was able to work on a variety of projects. He soon teamed up with fellow architect Karl G. Malmgren to design some of the city’s most famous structures. These buildings include the Manito Methodist Episcopal Church, the Spokane Club, and the Washington Water Power Building. In addition, Cutter and Malmgren also created some of the city’s most iconic residential buildings.
The Davenport Hotel, known as the crown jewel of Spokane, is one of the most impressive structures in the city. Cutter’s masterpiece is an iconic landmark that is known the world over, with its red brick and terra-cotta exterior and interior design reminiscent of Venetian palazzos. The Davenport Hotel opened in 1914 and established Spokane’s reputation as a cultural, economic, and social hub. However, the city had to face challenges after World War II, as automobile ownership and dispersed urban development changed the city’s transportation and shopping preferences.
There are more than a few mansions and other buildings that have been designed by Cutter. Amman, a six-story apartment building, was once the tallest residential building in Spokane. Before the war, it was thought to be the tallest building in the city. Cutter was an American architect whose style spanned the Classical Revival, Arts and Crafts, and Tudor styles.
