On his debut, Afridi scored his first century, which was a record at the time. He struck 11 sixes during the innings. He made his test debut against Australia at the age of 18, scoring 141 runs from just 191 balls. Shahid Afridi also took three wickets in the same match, conceding 54 runs.
Afridi’s career has seen its fair share of ups and downs. At one point, he was captain of the Pakistan national cricket team. However, he was banned for ‘damaging the pitch’ during an England match in 2005. After he pleaded guilty to the charge, he was banned for the first two games of the 2007 World Cup. Misbah-ul-Haq’s captaincy
After a disappointing series against the Proteas in South Africa, Misbah came under fire. However, the PCB stood by him and declared him captain until the 2015 World Cup. The result was that Pakistan won the ODI series 2-1 and became the first team from the sub-continent to defeat the Proteas in a home ODI series. Misbah was awarded the captaincy of Pakistan cricket team and won many accolades. He also led his team to a 3-0 Test series win over England in 2012.
Misbah was Pakistan’s most successful Test Captain. After Imran Khan, he was Pakistan’s highest run scorer in Test matches. However, he had a difficult time maintaining his form in ODIs. In 2015, Misbah announced his retirement as captain after the ICC World Cup. During his time as captain, Pakistan made history by becoming the No. 1 Test team in history.
As captain of Pakistan, Misbah-ul-Haq exhibited great defensive skills and a superior batting mind. Under his leadership, Pakistan lost just one Test match in 15 months after the spot-fixing scandal, and played 10 consecutive games without losing a single match. His calm leadership helped the team recover from the humiliation and criticism. Some critics had predicted that Pakistan would never recover or find replacements for the trio, but Misbah’s captaincy has given Pakistan the much-needed confidence to return to the top.
