In the meantime, the school pushed for the construction of a purpose-built campus and financial system.
PIFD has seven departments under four faculties. These include Fashion Design, Fashion Marketing and Merchandising, Textile Design, Gems & Jewelry Design, Leather Accessories & Footwear, Furniture Design & Manufacture, and Ceramic and Glass Design.
Since its inception in 1994, the PIFD has collaborated with various institutions and artists. Its academic staff has partnered with the textile and design industries, and promotes a multidisciplinary approach. The government of Pakistan has even proposed a charter of autonomy for the institute.
The PIFD is affiliated with several European and international design schools. Its academic programs are accredited by the HEC. The Institute also offers a Foundation Year program, which helps students get a solid foundation before choosing their major. Students also get the opportunity to study abroad in exchange programmes. They can participate in training in Paris or Boras, Sweden.

USAID has supported capacity building in Pakistan by providing classroom training to young graduates of PIFD. Through this training, young graduates can access better incomes. Currently, 50 percent of PIFD faculty members are women.
