Treatment of rosacea
Treatment of rosacea with intense pulse light may improve the skin’s appearance by reducing redness and underlying inflammation. Although the pathophysiology of rosacea remains unclear, several factors may be involved, including genetics, stress, vascular dysfunction, and neuronal dysfunction. Another study tested the effectiveness of intensive pulsed light in treating telangiectasia in patients with late-stage rosacea. Patients with Demodex folliculorum were enrolled from July 2013 to January 2016. Patients in the treatment group received three 540 nm-IPL treatments at four-week intervals. The control group received no treatment. Both groups were evaluated by the same clinician for telangiectasia. The treatment was considered effective if 90% or more of the telangiectasia was cleared up.
IPL therapy can improve the appearance of rosacea by reducing facial redness, flushing, and telangiectasia. The treatment is relatively painless, and most patients report little to no discomfort or bruising after treatment. It is recommended that patients undergo multiple treatments to experience optimal results.
Treatment of acne
Treatment of acne with intense pulsed light (IPL) is one way to reduce the appearance of spots and scars and promote collagen production in the affected area. It can also be effective in the treatment of stretch marks and wrinkles. However, the treatment is not a solution for all acne types. It can cause prickling, blistering, and bruising.
The effectiveness of IPL for acne depends on the wavelength used, the pulse duration, and the pulse delay. Different wavelengths are used for different skin types. Physicians prefer energy-based devices because of their short downtimes and low risk of side effects. Also, different cut-off filters were used to improve PIE and PIH, respectively.
