Medical Mission Sisters founded Holy Family Hospital in 1948
In 1948, the Medical Mission Sisters arrived in Berekum, Ghana to start the Holy Family Hospital, the first foundation of its kind in Africa. In addition to being a hospital for patients, it is also one of three hospitals in Ghana that offers postgraduate medical training. It attracts many young doctors for their training.
Dr. Ruth Pfau died in Karachi in 1948, but the Medical Mission Sisters remained committed to the cause and worked for many years there. Her funeral service took place in the Catholic Church, and her body was, transferred to the hospital’s grounds. In the following years, the hospital has grown in size and scope, becoming a renowned health institution in the region.
The hospital was once small and understaffed, but expansion has made it possible. It is now a 150-bed facility. In addition to being a hospital, it is also home to a School of Nursing. The Missionaries of Charity, founded by Mother Teresa, also run an orphanage and old people’s home in the area.
The Medical Mission Sisters have been working in Ghana for over fifty years, and during this time, the country’s infrastructure has changed dramatically. But the sisters have stayed committed to their mission, providing good health care to underprivileged patients. Sister Teresita began her work by exploring the root causes of the problem and developing creative solutions. She was deeply intelligent and insightful, and she brought healing and opportunity to thousands of women through her work. She also left a legacy of change in policy, including safe housing for women exploited by men.

Holy Family Hospital was first opened in 1889 as a general hospital. In 1985 it closed for a period of time but was, reopened in 1990 as a maternity hospital. Today it employs 172 healthcare professionals and has delivered more than 88,000 babies. This hospital accounts for about 60 percent of births in the surrounding area. Last year, it delivered 4626 babies, including 454 preemies. It expects to deliver 4,250 babies this year.
During the antebellum period, blacks were, only admitted to Birmingham’s hospitals by white physicians. The Civil Rights Act was, passed in 1964, but the need for an African American hospital declined as a result. After the establishment of Holy Family Hospital, the SCNs transferred the ownership of the facility to a non-profit organization. They did not leave the Ensley community, though, and continued their community service at Holy Family High School.
Holy Family Hospital is a national heritage hospital, and a prized possession of the Karachi Archdiocese. It has a nursing school, which trains 100 students in basic nursing and midwifery.
