In addition to its academic focus, the school has schools of law, medicine, Applied Sciences, and literature.

While Darulfunun was an important part of Ottoman higher education, its influence went beyond the Ottoman realm. It also contributed to the development of the Ottoman Turkish scientific language, which served as the vehicle for modern science throughout the empire.

Darulfunun at Istanbul University is one of the most important Turkish universities. Its campus is adjacent to Beyazit Square in the Fatih district of the city. The university was established on July 23, 1846 as a Darulfunun (House of Multiple Sciences) in Istanbul. Its predecessor, the Medrese, was founded in 1453 immediately after Mehmed II conquered Istanbul. In time, it evolved into what is now known as Istanbul University.
