It is home to Bhagat Singh

The 109th birth anniversary of revolutionary Bhagat Singh is being celebrated across Pakistan and India on August 15. In Jaranwala Pakistan, a fair is being organized at the ancestral home of the revolutionary. The fair will take place at Bangay village, where Bhagat Singh lived. The event is expected to attract at least 800-1,000 people.

The village is located near the site where Bhagat Singh was born. The city is named for him, and a 100-year-old gate is visible outside the town. The town’s municipality has recently renovated this gate. It was originally named “O’Dwyer Gate” after its first owner, Lieutenant Governor of Punjab Sir Michael Francis O’Dwyer. However, after the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, locals demanded that it be renamed, and President Lala Harnam Das approved the name on 30 March 1937.

During his childhood, Bhagat Singh spent his time with his family in his ancestral home. He studied in a village school until his fifth grade, where he started following the Non-Cooperation Movement of Mahatma Gandhi. In his teenage years, he began to openly defy British rule. He even burned books sponsored by the British government. Later, he left school and enrolled at the National College in Lahore. During the time of the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre in 1919 and the Nankana Sahib Massacre in 1921, he was inspired to take action.
