Garden design inspired by Luciano Giubbilei
The book, Garden design inspired by Luciano Giubblei, reveals the inspirations behind Giubbilei’s design. His inspirations range from the minimalist sculptures of Isamu Noguchi to the exotic glass and mosaic gardens of Frederic Lord Leighton. The book also includes planting plans and atmospheric photographs.
The designer was born in Siena, Italy and spent time working in the Villa Gamberaia gardens just outside of Florence. While in Florence, he encountered the ordered green universe of the Italian garden tradition. He later studied in London and established his own studio. Today, he is an internationally renowned garden designer with a diverse portfolio that includes projects in the United States, England, Continental Europe, and Morocco.
Giubbilei’s work combines classical features with a subtle, shy charm. He was just 19 years old when he first became inspired by a garden. He was delivering pastries in the Tuscan countryside and became entranced by the changing light throughout the day. He began taking pictures of landscapes and details of materials. It wasn’t long before he realised that garden design was his calling. He soon landed a job at the Villa Gameraia, a garden that is considered one of the most beautiful small Tuscan gardens.
Luciano visited La Foce many times after he received the commission. Despite the fact that Giubbilei had never intended to use flowers in his design, he was influenced by Monet’s garden. His passion for colour and botany led him to spend the rest of his life tending his gardens. While he was initially hesitant to include flowers in his designs, he eventually came to appreciate the transient nature of flowers. His work has received several awards at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
