Amjad Khan
Amjad Khan was an Indian actor and film director who worked in more than 130 films during his 20 year career. He was the son of actor Jayant Khan. During his career, he gained recognition for his role in the hit movie, Sholay. This film marked his comeback after a period of time when he faced several issues related to his health.
Ramesh Sippy came to watch Amjad Khan’s stage play. He assured him that he would get a good role soon. In order to prepare for the role, Amjad Khan read books on real-life dacoits. He also learnt about the real-life Gabbar Singh, who swore to cut off the noses and ears of 100 people. He was later shot dead.
The directors, Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar, wanted to cast a new face for the role of Gabbar. Danny Denzongpa had been their first choice, but due to date conflicts, he turned down the role. However, Salim and Javed were very keen on Amjad and talked to Ramesh about his character. They were also keen to avoid being held responsible for ruining Gabbar, so they suggested he change his role. However, Ramesh did not agree and remained firm.
Amjad Khan was only 35 years old when he was offered the role of Gabbar Singh in Sholay. He had initially been rejected by Javed Akhtar for his dark voice, but Salim persisted and eventually got him the role. He signed the film on the day of the birth of his first son. He even read the book Abhishapth Chambal, a novel written by Tarun Kumar Bhaduri, before making the film. After Sholay was released, he went on to play a string of negative roles in Hindi films.
Ramesh Shinde was ambitious in his vision for the movie. He didn’t skimp on the budget. The film was shot on 70mm film and the crew had to shoot each scene twice. Initially, the project was planned to last six months, but the schedule was changed because of the difficulties. During this period, the team traveled from Mumbai to Bangalore 27 times.
