Report on homeless
In an attempt to address the problem of homelessness, the provincial government has opened shelter homes at public hospitals. However, these homes have suffered a number of setbacks. For example, the government has failed to provide staff or proper security measures to protect patients. A shelter home at Services Hospital, which was, established last month, is now, closed due to a lack of resources and staff. As a result, patients have been sleeping on benches and bare floors in the corridors.
Despite the fact that the PTI government has promised to improve healthcare in Pakistan, the public health sector still remains in a dire condition. As a result, many patients have to travel to large cities like Lahore for medical treatment. Moreover, hospitals in small cities and rural areas in the province have limited medical facilities. In response to these problems, the government has set up shelter homes for the homeless and low-income patients. However, the administration of these homes must do more to make them clean and tidy.
Unidentified addicts
The death toll in the past three years has increased from 34 to 60, and the number of homeless addicts continues to rise. A new report from the hospital’s anti-drug campaign consultant, Dr Salman Kazmi, highlights the problem of addiction and the need to intervene. According to Dr Kazmi, drug addicts are at high risk of overdose and death due to a lack of food and shelter. The report calls for increased focus on addressing the issue of drug addiction and the need for treatment.
The drug addicts are, often seen on the sidewalks and parks of Lahore, consuming heroin and crystal methamphetamine. In addition they are, involved in begging on the streets, jacking cars and looting at night. Moreover, it is difficult to determine which of these addicts are, actually known by their real names. Edhi volunteers say the problem is routine and does not seem to be an isolated problem.
Drug addiction is a growing problem in Lahore. It is, estimated that 450 to 1,000 people use drugs a day in Lahore. Many of these individuals spend upwards of $1,500 a day on drugs. Approximately 460 of these individuals are homeless.
Injection drug addiction is a widespread problem in the city, but the problem is most acute among the city’s homeless population. Homeless addicts can be found living on the streets of the city, including Muslim Town Canal, Bilal Ganj, and Garhi Shahu. Many of them do not have proper identification documents, and they often resort to begging for money. As a result, they are exposed to the harsh winters and scorching summers.
Dead bodies
A six-member committee has been set up to investigate the incident. It has been tasked with finding the responsible parties and fixing responsibility. The investigation will be conducted under the specialised health secretary Muzamil Bashir. The bodies were, discovered on the rooftop of the hospital last week. Some people believe that they were, used as fodder by vultures and eagles. However, Nishtar Medical University’s Maryam Asharf insists that the bodies are only used in medical experiments and that the process is strictly followed by government rules.
According to sources, the newly-established mortuary was not fully operational after one year. The hospital was, not allocated police stations and the Specialised Healthcare and Medical Education Department was unable to allocate police stations for the new forensic department. However, the doctors and staff were able to recruit 43 paramedics for the new forensic department.
The newly-built morgue would provide cold storage for the bodies, as well as a place for the doctors to conduct an autopsy for medico-legal procedures. It would also meet future needs. More than 800 patients die in the hospital every month, and most of these deaths are, caused by neurological complications.
According to police, the bodies are, not identified. A month ago, only eight bodies were, identified and shifted to the morgue. Only one body had started decay, while the other nine had not yet been identified. The authorities should investigate the issue and take immediate action.
