The Lahore Zoo was established in 1872 and is one of the largest zoos in Pakistan. Managed by the Forest, Wildlife and Fisheries department of the Government of Pakistan, it contains 1378 animals from 135 species. Here, you can learn about its history and see the animals that call it home.
Historical significance
Located on The Mall, Lahore Zoo has a long history. It was founded in the 1860s as an aviary. From 1872 to 1921, it was under the control of the Lahore Municipal Committee. Later, the zoo was administered by the Zoo Advisory Committee. In 1962, the West Pakistan Agriculture and Livestock Development Department took over the zoo’s management.
Lahore Zoo is home to a large number of animals and plants. It once held every botanical species known to man. Today, the zoo has about 134 species of animals, including 82 species of birds, eight reptiles, and 45 types of mammal. The zoo was originally run by the Lahore Municipal Corporation, but was taken over by the Deputy Commissioner in 1962. In 1982, the Lahore Zoo was handed over to the Wildlife and Parks Department.
The zoo has recently expanded its exhibits by adding Bengal tigers to its collection. The first Bengal tigers were brought to the zoo from Belgium in 1992. Later, six of them died from Trypanosomiasis, and four more died in 2006. After four years of captive breeding, the zoo received two white Bengal tigers from Indonesia in 2009. The import was approved under CITES, a treaty between the United States and other countries to protect endangered and rare species.
The Lahore Zoo also has a very active education program. It offers guided tours for school groups and has information boards about animals and plants. It also has a touch table where kids can touch parts of animals. It has also created posters about Pakistan’s endangered animals. Its outreach programme is one of a kind in the country.
Lahore Zoo also features a botanical garden. The botanical garden is spread over 140 acres. It is located on the Lawrence Road and is adjacent to the zoo. This park also has two famous libraries – the Quaid e Azam library and the Darul-Salam library. This park has been modeled after the famous Kew Gardens in London. It has about 150 varieties of trees and shrubs. There are also 50 types of creepers and 30 palms. The gardens also have numerous species of flowers.
The zoo is home to a variety of wildlife including Asiatic jackals, Asian hubara, and juvenile tortoises. There is also a small enclosure that once housed smooth-coated otters. These days, it is home to red-eared sliders and Indian flap shell turtles. Occasionally, juvenile mugger crocodiles are held here as a temporary holding cage.
Animals housed at zoo
The Lahore Zoo started as a small aviary in 1872 and has since grown to house over 1380 animals. Its mission is to promote conservation and education for wildlife and to provide recreational opportunities for the general public. The zoo is home to more than nine hundred and twenty species of birds and reptiles. Its collection also includes over three hundred and thirty species of mammals.
The Lahore Zoo attracts more than 4.5 million visitors per year. Those who visit the zoo are provided with clean spaces, well built paths, and various refreshments. The zoo is open from 9:00am to dusk seven days a week.
Unfortunately, the animals at the Lahore Zoo are often in poor health. Many of the animals there are poorly fed, insecure, or untame. This can make them aggressive. Bushra Khan, the director of the Lahore Zoo, has stated that preserving rare species is the zoo’s main role.
A few of the animals housed at the Lahore Zoo include the Bengal tiger, Indian peafowl, mute swan, ostrich, and lion. The zoo’s animal park also includes safari tracks. The entire facility covers over 80 acres. The zoo has become known as the Lahore Safari Zoo.
Another notable feature of the Lahore Zoo is its collection of trees. There are 450 different species of trees in the zoo. The Zoo also has a walk-through aviary. The zoo has an extensive collection of birds, including pheasants and Indian peafowl. The zoo is an excellent educational center that attracts 3.1 million visitors per year. It also provides research facilities for foreign organizations and college students.
The Lahore Zoo recently added two Bengal tigers to its collection. The zoo first acquired a Bengal tiger from Belgium in 1992. After six years of captive breeding, Lahore Zoo acquired two white Bengal tigers from Indonesia on 27 March 2009. In accordance with CITES, the importation of endangered species is strictly regulated. Before the tigers could be imported, the National Council for Conservation of Wildlife required a certificate of approval.
In addition to chimps, the zoo also houses several other animals. There are lions, leopards, and pumas, as well as cheetahs.
Facilities offered to visitors
The Lahore Zoo is home to a variety of animals, including Bengal tigers and pumas. The zoo also houses a variety of educational exhibits such as touch tables and posters about animals that are endangered in Pakistan. The zoo has recently undergone renovations to provide visitors with a more enjoyable experience.
The Lahore Zoo was originally established in 1872. It has undergone significant changes since then and is now operated by a self-sustaining organization. While the Zoo was once considered a well-maintained zoological park, it has since fallen victim to a lack of recreational facilities and unsanitary conditions.
For example, the Lahore zoo’s facilities were inadequate for lions, and the space was too small for the species to thrive. In addition, the animals were housed in small enclosures with small pools and little enrichment. Most of the animals spent the day lying down, awaiting food. To increase the animals’ activity levels, they should be made to hunt for food on a more challenging surface.
The zoo’s Reptile House was renovated in 2006, and now houses the zoo’s reptiles. The new enclosures have improved ventilation and air conditioning. The zoo also has a guinea pig section and a small taxidermy museum.
The lions at Lahore zoo are kept in small groups. The breeding pair at the zoo was observed to be affectionate and playful, but their size and area restricted their normal behavior. This reduced the quality of life in the cages, and it was found that breeding males were more likely to display stereotypical behavior. The study also highlighted the importance of social grouping for breeding purposes.
Biological research conducted at zoo
Lahore Zoo has a wide range of animal species and is a center of excellence for scientific and educational research. The zoo has close links with local and international organizations such as the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and IUCN. It is a member of SAZARC (South Asian Zoo Association for Regional Cooperation) and hosted its 5th annual meeting in 2004.
The study included two groups of lions, including a solitary male, a breeding pair and a brother-sister duo. It also studied the effects of enclosure size and environmental conditions on lion behavior. The results from the study indicate that lions are prone to exhibiting abnormal behaviour.
The Lahore Zoo is the third or fourth oldest zoo in the world, and is considered one of the oldest zoos in the world. It was established in 1752 as a menagerie and opened its doors to the public in 1779. The London Zoo, which is the oldest, opened its doors to the public in 1828. Similarly, the Alipore Zoo in India was opened in 1876.
The Department of Zoology at Lahore College for Women University conducted a three-day workshop on ecotourism and biodiversity conservation. The goal of the workshop was to increase awareness of the importance of ecotourism and biodiversity conservation. The workshop provided a platform for the participants to share ideas and learn about the latest technologies for conservation of wildlife and habitats.
In a separate study, researchers studied the impact of helminths on captive populations. A significant percentage of Anatolian wild sheep and twenty percent of the Punjab urial in the Lahore Zoo died of tick paralysis. Their findings also pointed to nutritional deficiencies in the captive populations, which result in weakened musculature and lower lifespans.
The Reptile House at the zoo houses most of the zoo’s reptiles. The facility was renovated in 2006 and has improved air conditioning and ventilation for the animals. It also houses guinea pigs and a small taxidermy museum.
