Vain can also refer to being conceited, unappealing, or ineffectual. In other words, it can describe someone who is too concerned with appearance or quality. Examples of people who are vain include those who boast about their looks, take selfies, and are very self-important. They will also promise things for the sake of making them look good.

A vain person constantly looks in the mirror to evaluate their appearance. They are obsessed with their appearance and try to achieve the perfect look. A vain person may also be narcissistic. The person may even have a personality disorder that causes them to be overly self-critical.

Epictetus uses the word to refer to a good quality. In other words, the term is appropriate to the context. In Epictetus’s writing, the word is concerned with a person’s appearance, quality, or worth.

Vainness is a French adjective
