Reliability is a key aspect of high-reliability socio-technical systems. To provide a high level of reliability, a system must have the ability to detect and respond to errors. In addition, systems must also be able to self-regulate to prevent failures.

Socio technical systems also include organizations outside the technology sector. For example, chemical manufacturers, banks, and government organizations are all examples of socio technical systems. These systems combine the advantages of managing both social and technical systems and recognize the complexity that comes from humans using technology.

In socio-technical systems, inter-dependencies are a critical feature. People and technology interact with each other in a manner that is both self-regulating and open to external sources of supply and demand. This opens the system to disturbances, which can lead to instability. When this instability becomes too extreme, it can lead to a crisis.

Technologists do not produce tools directly, but they make systems that can meet certain requirements, such as utility, usability, and safety. In short, technology is the application of scientific knowledge to improve human life.

Technology creates many new things every day, and most modern tools are dependent on each other. The French Revolution, the collapse of the Inca civilization, and border conflicts on the edge of rich and poor nations illustrate how fragile this balance can become. The human and natural worlds are interdependent, and our choices impact how we live our lives.

The process of technology can motivate scientific research and provide direction. For example, the theory of conservation of energy developed because of the technological problem of increasing the efficiency of commercial steam engines. Likewise, the development of genetic engineering motivated by the problem of mapping the locations of genes.

Today’s tools of technology in the classroom include electronic grade books, digital portfolios, educational games, and real-time feedback.

Tools of technology are helpful to teachers, but they should also used with caution. Teachers must train in appropriate use of technology, and technology-savvy faculty should reward for their efforts. While new technologies can be helpful, they can also be overindulgent and overwhelming. Many people do not have the requisite knowledge to use them effectively. Technology-savvy faculty are crucial in this process.

As with any tool, the real effects of technology depend on the people using it. Some technologies inspire change, while others catalyze destruction. Both can be positive or negative to society. But how we use them depends on the extraneous factors surrounding them, which may be more important than the evolution of tech itself.
